Replace a CH Control Valve or its Motor

Valves that control certain things within any equipment give extra flexibility to central heating systems, however, when they malfunction or they are worn, they can affect the smooth running of the system and should be dealt with immediately. N11 Plumbers can find, identify and rectify faults on valves. When you purchase a new replacement valve, avoid modifying pipework, by making sure it is one of the same type as the one you are replacing.
At your consumer unit, take out the fuse or switch off MCB for the circuit to which the central heating controls are connected. The cable from the valve will be wired to a nearby junction box, which contains the central heating systems other control cabling. Remove the cover of the box and disconnect the wiring for the valve, make a diagram of the terminals used, for easy re-connection. Remove the old valve by simply cutting through the pipe on each side. On fitting the new valve, bridge the gap with short sections of pipe, complete with joints on both ends. Spring the assembly into place and connect the joints to the old pipe, then tighten the valve cap nuts. Re-connect the valve cabling and insert the fuse or switch on MCB. An N11 Plumber can fit all motorised valves.

Replace the Valve Motor.
When a motor driven valve is faulty, it could be due to a motor problem. If that is the case, then it should be replaced. It is not necessary to drain the system. Isolate the electricity supply to the central heating system, don’t merely turn of the programmer, as motorised valves have a permanent live feed. As soon as it is isolated, remove the cover and check for a voltage at the motor, if none is indicated, then, undo the single screw that secures the motor. Open the valve, and using the fitted manual lever, remove the motor by lifting it out. Disconnect by cutting off the connectors. Insert the correct type and size of new motor, then let the lever spring back to the closed position. Refit the retaining screw. Strip the ends and connect the wires, using the new connectors. Replace the cover and test the operation of the valve by turning on the system.
