Waste Pipe Compression Fittings

The plumbing compression fitting is very often used by plumbers in the home. They are the fitting of choice as they are reliable and very quick to fit, and need no soldering to make them watertight. They are used on lots of different fittings. There are quite a few advantages when a compression fitting is used, but they are not suitable for all jobs. An N11 Plumber is experienced with compression fittings. The compression fitting almost without fail will create a watertight seal by compressing two rubber rings in between the pipe and fitting. Plumbing fittings are now the compression type because they allow a job to be carried out and broken down really easily and quickly if required, perhaps to clear a blockage. If for instance if a fitting was being used on a waste pipework there is a point on the pipe that the fitting will reach when it is slipped over. So you must allow for the extra measurement and it will make sure that the joint is good and watertight. Once the pipe is cut for the joint make sure that you file of any burrs or rough edges, which can be done using a half round file. Pay great attention to the inner edge because as the water flows through it may have foreign objects in it that can snag if it is rough and eventually cause a block in the pipework. The compression fitting is also used with traps, which are fitted using big plastic nuts at each end and a rubber ring or washer for both ends of the connection. Put the large nut over the pipework. Then, the rubber ring or washer. If either is tapered, fit so the taper faces the fitting. Now, push the pipe into the fitting and tighten the nut. Hand-tight should be fine, as the rubber washer is quite soft and can be adequately compressed by hand.
